School Options are Available

The first week of school is almost over. I personally know six families who have pulled their young kids out of school due to incompetence or indifference demonstrated by teachers or administrators.

My advice, as an “old” autism parent is to take a hard look at online school choices available in your area – educate yourself.

Most parents are unable or afraid (I’m one) to attempt building a curriculum – and rightfully so! Online charter school programs, in many ways, fill the gap between homeschooling and traditional school. You don’t have to invent the wheel.

Two major reasons why an online charter school works for us:

1. No need to jump through governmental hoops to document ANYTHING! Your kiddo is part of a legitimate, accredited school. You complete enrollment forms. Period.

Yes, you must adhere to the school’s guidelines, but can rest assured that their guidelines are monitored by the state Dept. of Ed., and also by a chartering university or school district.

2. Curriculum – As a single parent who is not widely recognized for responsible adulting, building my own, or adapting someone else’s, curriculum was a show-stopper. Our school, Great Lakes Cyber Academy (GLCA) provides an engaging format, with a combination of Live Lessons (Skype-like) and entertaining self-paced coursework.

Disclaimer: GLCA does not currently serve the littles, but I hope this post will give you pause. Step off the wheel and consider the battles you’ve already fought on behalf of your kiddo this week – in preschool, kindergarten, first grade… In most cases, it does NOT get better.

You owe it to yourself – and your kiddos – to look at your options.
